NANCY'S STORY

My name is Nancy. I live in the state of West Virginia in the U.S.A. I found your site by doing a search on the internet for ALS. So here is my story.

My precious husband of almost 12 years was diagnosed in May of 2004 with ALS. It started in the bulbar area so the first thing affected was his speech and his ability to swallow. In September of 2004 he had a G-Tube inserted for feeding. He lost the ability to talk altogether in October 2004. He left this world in May of 2005.

Believe it or not, my husband went quickly. On Thursday May 5th he was accepted by hospice. I went to work as usual after Hospice left our house that day as my husband was still walking around, still feeding himself through his G-Tube, and still doing pretty well.

On Friday afternoon my son and I came home and found him on the floor. His legs had just all of a sudden given out on him. By Sunday morning, Hospice was having a hospital bed delivered. By Monday he was unresponsive.

My husband had always been extremely active and would have been miserable in a wheelchair. So that is a stage he never had to go through. He died 4 days after my birthday in May. He was the one true love of my life and I would not give away one moment of the time we had together. He was a born-again Christian and on the Friday that he fell I said to him, "Baby, you're ready to go Home, aren't you?", and he nodded his head, yes.

I know where he is and that is a huge comfort, but I miss him so much, and our beautiful nine year old son who adored his daddy, misses him, too. This Sunday is Fathers Day here in the U.S. and it will be the first Father's Day my son will have without his Daddy. Please PRAY for our precious little son and for me.

I thank you for allowing me to send this little story. You are wonderful for having this site and allowing people to contact you.
