The ALS Family Support Group of Ohio, Inc. has announced that they will be working in conjunction with the Akron branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in holding support group meetings. This is the MDA’s first official affiliation with a support group in the Tuscarawas County area. They will be represented by Gina Kilberg, their Health Care Service Coordinator. The meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm in Union Hospital’s Reeves Auditorium in Dover. There is no cost to attend.
The ALS Family Support Group is based in New Philadelphia and has operated for the last four and a half years under the direction of Phyllis Van Horn. The organization will continue in its regular operation with no financial support from MDA. The only change will be the joining together in the support group meetings to provide expanded services for victims of ALS and other neuromuscular disorders, their families and caregivers. This is a perfect fit for both organizations.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world leader among voluntary agencies in fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). MDA’s ALS Division offers the most comprehensive range of services of any voluntary health agency in the nation, and leads the search for a treatment or cure through its aggressive, worldwide research program.

Over 250 people gathered last night to honor our community
3/30/07 - Hometown Heroes Honored
Over 250 people gathered last night to honor our community’s finest at the 2007 Hometown Heroes Awards Banquet. The Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross honored 15 Hometown Heroes and awarded 8 children for a youth writing contest. Brian Proctor, Chairman of the Red Cross Board, says the event is designed to honor everyday citizens from Tuscarawas, Carroll and Harrison Counties that go above and beyond the call of duty. Executive Director Chad Conrad says several nominations were received and says there was a theme among this year's group of winners. They were all honored for not just one heroic act but for outstanding service to their community.
Phyllis Van Horn of New Philadelphia was given the distinction of Health Care Hero. Van Horn is the director of the ALS Family Support Group of Ohio. She founded the group after her twin brother and sister contracted and died from the disease most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Van Horn says she doesn’t consider herself the hero. She says the real heroes are those suffering from the disease.
